SERVICES AVAILABLE UNDER THE NEW GENERAL MEDICAL SERVICE CONTRACT

Core Services, Additional Services and some of the Enhanced Services as agreed by the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Please ask the Practice Manager or Senior Receptionist for the details of these services. Provision of few Enhanced services is responsibility of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.


CERVICAL CYTOLOGY (Smear Test)

Cervical smear test should be carried out once every 3 years from 25yrs - 50yrs of age, and every 5yrs from 50yrs to 64yrs of age. Patients can make an appointment for this service by telephoning or in person. Patients are invited by letter from Cervical Screening Wales. The Practice Nurse is always available to patients for this purpose.


DISTRICT NURSE

The District Nurses duties include visiting Patients of any age in their home, giving practical assistance or offering professional advice. Each Patients needs are assessed and the care/treatment is planned accordingly. District Nursing sisters are experienced nurses with additional qualifications in district Nursing.


FAMILY PLANNING

A full range of family planning services is available during normal surgery hours. This includes contraceptive advice, oral contraceptive injection, referral for termination of pregnancy where indicated by law. Insertion of Intra-uterine contraceptive device or implant is not undertaken by practice, but these services are available locally and patients requiring these services will be directed appropriately.


HEALTH VISITOR

Health Visitors are qualified and experienced nurses who specialise in child and family health. They are highly skilled in all aspects of childcare and development. They visit families with young children at their home to assess their well being. Routine weight check of babies is not done at the surgery, but you can drop in for this at other local centres. Please ask your Health Visitor for details.


MATERNITY MEDICAL SERVICES

Once pregnancy is confirmed, we arrange a shared care with the hospital, both before and after the baby is born.


NEW REGISTRATION HEALTH CHECK-UP

Persons who wish to register with us as a patient will be asked to fill in a brief questionnaire and will also be offered an appointment to see the Practice Nurse to assess their general health, which includes height, weight and blood pressure measurement and also a routine test of urine. If necessary further investigations will be arranged. Practice is not obliged to register persons on its list if they live outside the Practice Area.


MINOR SURGERY

We perform a variety of minor surgical procedures in the practice such as removal and cauterisation of warts and veruccae and injection in the joints etc. This avoids the waiting for hospital appointments. Please consult the doctor for this service.


WALK-IN CENTRE

You should go to University Hospital of Wales (Accident & Emergency Department) for injuries (accidents) and emergencies. If you are unable to make your own way to hospital, you can ring 999 for Ambulance but you must use this service only for real emergencies.


MINOR INJURIES

Please be advised that the following minor injuries are most appropriately provided at Accident and Emergency Departments:

  • Lacerations that can only be closed by gluing and suturing
  • Foreign Bodies
  • Blows to the head with or without loss of consciousness
  • Recent eye injuries
  • Severe burns

    We are not commissioned by the Local Health Board to provide these services at the practice.
